Some habits become invisible
Glow Notes™ Edition: Wellness Wednesday
Some habits become invisible
Your lips feel tight.
Your hand reaches for the lip balm.
You apply it, put it down, and continue with your day.
There may not have been a conscious decision at all.
And that is what I want you to notice today.
Not because using lip balm is wrong. Not because you should ignore discomfort. And certainly not because every recurring dry-lip concern comes from a habit.
But because something you do often enough can become so automatic that you stop noticing the moment that comes before it.
That moment may be worth getting back.
When care becomes a reflex
If you’ve been dealing with recurring dry lips for a while, reapplying can begin to feel like the obvious response.
Tightness? Apply.
Dryness? Apply.
You notice your lips while answering an email, sitting in traffic, preparing dinner, or finally getting a quiet moment at the end of the day?
Apply again.
For some women, the behavior becomes so familiar that the response happens before there has been time to observe what is actually happening.
And when you’re already carrying a full mental load, that makes sense.
We tend to rely on familiar responses when there isn’t much room left to think.
Notice first
There is a quiet distinction between reacting to a sensation and noticing a pattern.
A pause gives you a little room to make that distinction.
You might notice that you always reach for your lip balm at a certain time.
You might realize you were touching or licking your lips first.
You might notice that the sensation appeared after using something different.
Or you may simply discover that reapplication has become something you do without thinking about it at all.
None of those observations diagnoses the reason your lips are dry.
They give you information.
And information is often more useful than automatically adding more.
A different kind of care
Today is World Humanitarian Day, a day that recognizes humanitarian workers and the people they serve.
It also brings the word care into sharper focus.
Many high-capacity women know how to care outwardly. You notice what needs doing. You respond. You carry. You help. You keep moving.
Sometimes that same speed follows you into the way you care for yourself.
Something feels uncomfortable, and the instinct is immediate:
Fix it. Add something. Keep going.
But care does not always have to begin with doing more.
Sometimes care begins with paying attention.
That idea is at the center of this week’s Wellness Wednesday conversation.
In The Moment Before You Reach for Lip Balm Matters, I’m exploring what can happen when lip care becomes automatic—and why the few seconds before another application may contain information you’ve been moving too quickly to notice.
Your small ritual for today
The next time you reach for lip balm, you do not need to stop yourself from using it.
Simply pause before you apply it.
Notice what made you reach for it.
Was it tightness?
A familiar time of day?
A moment of stress or concentration?
Did you touch or lick your lips first?
Or did your hand simply reach for it because that is what your hand has learned to do?
No judgment.
No complicated tracking system.
Just notice first.
That is enough for today.
Care can include you, too
If you are someone who spends much of your life noticing what everyone else needs, consider this your reminder that attention can turn inward without becoming another obligation.
You do not need to monitor yourself perfectly.
You do not need to solve your lips in one day.
You are simply creating enough space to recognize what is happening before deciding what comes next.
And if you have ever found yourself saying, “I keep reapplying, but I still feel like I’m starting over,” this week’s conversation was made to help you look at that experience differently.
Today, let care be a little less automatic.
Notice first. Then choose.
