When Your Lips Keep Getting Your Attention
Glow Notes™ Edition: Transformative Tuesday
You’re reading an email. Your finger moves across your lips. You notice a dry spot, and later you find yourself checking it again.
It is such a small action that you may not remember the first time you did it. You just know your lips have been on your mind all day.
Two parts of the moment
When your lips feel uncomfortable, it makes sense to pay attention. The feeling is real. But the feeling and what you do next are two different parts of the moment.
You might feel tightness and touch your lips. You might notice a rough spot and reach for balm. Or you may check while your attention is on something else entirely.
As a registered nurse, I want to understand that sequence before assuming every uncomfortable moment calls for another product. Checking your lips does not tell you why they feel dry. It can help you notice how you respond when the discomfort returns.
That distinction leaves room for appropriate care. If your lips need a non-irritating balm, you can use one. You do not have to ignore discomfort to become more aware of your routine.
One thing to notice today
If you catch yourself checking your lips, try asking: What did I feel just before my hand moved?
You don’t need to keep count or watch yourself all day. One ordinary moment is enough. Perhaps you noticed tightness while working. Perhaps your finger found a rough spot while you were thinking about something else.
Whatever you observe, let it be information, not a reason to blame yourself.
I wrote Tuesday’s article for the woman who keeps thinking, “Why am I checking my lips again?” It explores how to notice the discomfort and the response separately, what that observation can and cannot tell you, and when recurring symptoms deserve more support.
A little more room to choose
The goal is not to catch every habit or perfect every response. It is to give yourself a little more room to understand what happened before deciding what care makes sense.
That is a gentler place to begin than assuming one dry moment means you need to change everything.
